In 2003, UCAVFA started the importation of Aloe Vera seedlings. A total of about 413,965 Aloe Vera seedlings which was bought from Southern Fields, Inc. these seedlings were planted on an estimated area of 103 hectares. Since 2003, farmers have continued to transplant their Aloe Vera seedlings from their mother gardens and expanded their Aloe Vera farms as well as selling and giving seedlings to interested new farmers.
Uganda Commercial Aloe Vera Farmers’ Association (UCAVFA) is a registered organisation in Uganda. Initially the organisation was involved in importing Aloe Vera seedlings from a Texas USA corporation and then distributes them to interested farmers. Currently, over 130,000 farmers have planted Aloe Vera seedlings covering an area of about 380 hectares in the country. The organisation has halted the importation of seedlings from USA. The organisation at the moment collects seedlings from member farmers who planted earlier and distribute them to new members in need. This has helped to increase the acreage under Aloe Vera cultivation at a low cost among farmers. Presently UCAVFA is involved in purchasing Aloe Vera leaf and seedlings from farmers which is exported to Kenya and Tanzania.
